State & local taxes

Washington state & local excise tax, made clear

Washington has no personal or corporate income tax, which lulls new owners into thinking tax is simple here. It isn't. We get Washington small businesses registered and keep them current on the state and local filings that actually apply.

B&O taxes explained

The Business & Occupation (B&O) tax is charged on gross receipts, not profit, at different rates by activity: retailing, wholesaling, service, and more. There are no deductions for costs, so it catches people off guard. Many businesses owe both the state B&O tax and a separate city B&O tax, such as Seattle's. We make sure you're classified right and filing each at the correct rate and frequency.

What we handle

  • DOR registration: getting set up with the Department of Revenue
  • B&O tax: classification, calculation, and monthly/quarterly/annual filing
  • Sales tax: collection, tracking by jurisdiction, and remittance
  • Local and city taxes: including Seattle's own B&O and business license
  • New-business setup: licenses, accounts, and a filing calendar

Setting up a new Washington business?

This is the moment to get it right. We'll walk you through registration, the licenses you need, and the filing schedule you'll live on, then keep your bookkeeping and payroll aligned, and handle ongoing filings for you.

One note: We focus on Washington state and local filings. We don't prepare federal income-tax returns, but we'll hand your preparer clean books and coordinate as needed.
